Lotus Herbals Safe Sun UV Screen Matte Gel SPF 50 Review: The Best Option For A Shine Free Sunny Outing

Most people are under the misconception that people with lighter skin tones do not get tanned. I am slightly on the lighter side and innumerable people have told me ‘You are so lucky, you are fair and fair people only get red and do not get tanned’. I would have to correct them saying that not all fair-skinned people are immune to tanning. There are people like me who get tanned by spending just 5 minutes in the sun. Which is why using a sunscreen is highly imperative for me. Till now I have used several sunscreen lotions and most of them gave me good coverage but since they were all oil based I would have breakouts too often. Finding a strong sunscreen that would be mild on my skin had become an impossible task till someone suggested me to buy a gel based sunscreen. Herbal products are the safest bet and I do not mind experimenting with them. So, I tried the Lotus Herbals safe sun UV screen matte gel SPF 50 and here is my experience using it.

Lotus Herbals Safe Sun UV Screen Matte Gel SPF 50 Review

What does it claim?

It is a non-oily sunscreen gel that provides fresh and clean look while protecting against all forms of sun damage i.e. tan, burn, ageing, and cancer.

How to use?

Take sufficient quantity of the gel onto your fingers and apply it onto the skin that will be exposed to direct sun at least 20 minutes before stepping out.

Does it fulfill its claim?

The gel comes in an orange plastic tube with a flip cover. The firm flip cover makes the tube travel-friendly, as there is no chance of the gel leaking out. The gel is translucent and is easily absorbed by the skin. It smells like a leaf and like most gels feels cool on the skin. It is light on the skin, does not feel sticky, and dries quickly. You can also wear it under your foundation.

I spend very limited time under the sun so the real test for the gel was when I visited an amusement park where I was in the sun for more than 4 hours. For that outing, I had used two different sunscreens, one for my face and one my arms. For my face, I used Lotus Safe Sun UV Screen Gel and for my arms, I used VLCC’s Sun Block Lotion. I did so because I hate tan lines on my arms where half the hand becomes a tone darker than the other half. And VLCC’s sweat free lotion is one of the most effective sunscreens. However, its creamy formula doesn’t suit my skin and causes a breakout so I do not use it for my face anymore. For my face I used Lotus sunscreen and I must say the gel was good. I did get slightly tanned but not as badly as I would without it which was because the gel isn’t sweat proof. I sweat like a pig, which is why the sunscreen was easily wiped off. So, I had to re-apply it in order to prevent tanning. The best thing about this gel is its matte effect. My skin is oily and this matte gel effectively controlled the shine on my face.

It claims to protect against all types of sun damage but I am not a 100% convinced with the claim. I did get tanned despite applying it. However, it does fulfill its claim of providing a fresh and clean finish to the face.

What’s good about it?

Non-oily

Non-greasy

Controls skin oil

Is easily and quickly absorbed by the skin

Can be used under make-up

Makes skin look fresh

Suits oily-acne prone skin

What’s not so good about it?

Not sweat-proof

Contains paraben

Requires frequent re-application

I give Lotus Herbals Safe Sun UV Screen Matte Gel SPF 50 4 out of 5 rating. The major shortcoming of this product is the need for frequent re-application . Otherwise, the gel works great for oily skin.
