The Secret Life Of My Secretary Review: Watch It For Some Fluffy Romance And The Unforgettable Veronica Park

Yes, this is yet another office romance where the self-centered, taskmaster boss falls for the hard-working, and poor secretary. This clichéd trope can sometimes get really boring. However, that is certainly not the case with this drama. ‘The Secret Life Of My Secretary’ offers an old wine in a new tempting bottle and it works. I was a little late on catching up with this drama but once I was into it, it had me completely. As much as I would like to say that the writing was decent enough to keep me engaged, there is no denying that it was actually the cast that made the drama what it is. I personally enjoyed this drama a lot and allow me to tell you what’s good and not so good about it.

The Secret Life Of My Secretary (2019) (32 Episodes)

The Secret Life Of My Secretary Review

Do Min Ik (Kim Young Kwang), the director of T&T mobile, is a sharp businessman who can read people’s mind through their facial expressions. However, he is also a self-centered boss who often imposes onerous tasks on his secretary Jung Gal Hee (Jin Ki Joo) without ever acknowledging her sincerity towards work. Gal Hee diligently completes all his official and unofficial tasks with the hope of earning permanent employment with the company. Sadly, a past betrayal has made Min Ik distrustful of secretaries and he ruthlessly shatters Gal Hee’s dream of becoming a permanent employee. Angry, she decides to seek revenge from him when she incidentally witnesses his accident which permanently changes his relationship with her.

Let’s weigh this hate-to-love, boss-secretary, rich man-poor woman drama on our drama beam balance and see what’s worth watching in it.

Good Weights

I enjoyed watching ‘The Secret Life Of My Secretary’ because…

…I absolutely loved Veronica Park.

The Secret Life Of My Secretary Review

Yes, I write this point first because I eagerly waited for this drama every week just to watch her. It is impossible to watch this drama and not like Veronica Park because she is AWESOMMMMMMMMMMME!!

Actress Kim Jae Kyung filled so much life in her character that my screen would light up each time she came on it.

How can anyone not like her??

Veronica Park is a rich spoilt brat who lives promiscuously after being heartbroken several times. When she meets the not so rich Gi Dae Ju she falls for him because he shows no interest in her.

Dae Ju’s lack of interest in her drives her crazy and she tries out everything possible to have him like her. Their love story is super cute just like the two of them. Their chemistry is also phenomenal probably because both the actors are visually attractive. I so wished they had more screen time. It would be a dream come true to see Veronica Park and Gi Dae Ju in another show taking forward their individual love story.

…the fluffy romance between Do Min Ik and Jung Gal Hee was enjoyable.

Actors Kim Young Kwang and Jin Ki Joo may not be masters of their craft but they both have pleasing personalities which kind of covers up their shortcomings in acting.

The love story is nothing new. We have a selfish rude boss being mean and unfair to his secretary till one day he suffers an accident that makes him dependent on her. This dependency slowly turns to love for both of them.

Of course, there are sub-plots that keep you engaged in the drama. What keeps the drama going is the cute chemistry that actors Kim Young Kwang and Jin Ki Joo share. They look good together which is why you are compelled to overlook the obvious flaws in the drama.

Bad Weights

I did NOT LIKE ‘The Secret Life Of My Secretary’ because…

…I did not appreciate Do Min Ik acting like a kid all the time. I get it that Do Min Ik lacks love in life but why make him so childish? He often pouts and behaves like a little boy. I’m not sure if the character was written like that or it was the director’s call. Whatever it was it annoyed me a lot.

…the plot had gaping loopholes that made story arcs look nonsensical. There were several instances in the drama where the symptoms to Do Min Ik’s medical condition would conveniently be chucked or brought forward. After the accident or assault, Do Min Ik is unable to recognize people’s faces. Sometimes he could see Gal Hee sometimes he couldn’t. Sometimes he could identify Dae Ju sometimes he couldn’t even in same clothes. I felt that the writers would dumb Min Ik down or smarten him up as per their convenience. There was no consistency in his medical condition which is wrong especially when you have the entire story revolving around it.

Even though boss-secretary romance is quite common in drama world ‘The Secret Life of My Secretary’ does not bore you for sure. If anything it will bring a huge smile to your face the way it brought to mine. Nit-picking at faulty details can ruin the watching experience so I highly recommend watch this drama for fun and nothing more.

I give ‘The Secret Life Of My Secretary’ 3.5 out of 5 rating. Yet another office romance with an interesting twist and lovable supporting cast. I would personally say watch it for the wacko Veronica Park.
