5 (The Only) Dramas I Have Ever Re-watched Till Date
Over the last six years, I have watched over a hundred Asian dramas. And of these, there are shows that I have loved immensely and given high ratings and then there are those that I have rated average but have stuck with me for long.
This post is about dramas that I may have not rated high but have stuck with me despite their flaws. Such is my attachment to these shows that I have re-watched them multiple times. I almost NEVER re-watch a show simply because I feel re-watching something is a waste of time when you can watch something new. So, no matter how much I like a show, I do not re-watch it except the dramas mentioned below.
These dramas may not be the best dramas out there but I have watched them multiple times from start to end because something about it has appealed to me in some way. For every drama, the reason to re-watch is different and so I have mentioned what I like most about them.
1. Autumn’s Concerto
I watched Autumn’s Concerto in 2018 and gave it a 4 rating. Here is the synopsis and detailed review of this Taiwanese drama.
Reasons I Re-watch ‘Autumn’s Concerto’
The main reason I keep going back to this drama is the second half of the show. We see that Guang Xi has lost his memories for the past few years and is now a big-shot lawyer. Due to a misdemeanor in court, he has to complete certain hours doing public service in a remote village. It is here that he is reunited with his first love, Mu Cheng.
I simply love it when destiny plays a part in bringing two people together. Guang Xi has no memory of Mu Cheng and she too does not remind him of their shared past. However, he falls in love with her again but cannot act upon his feelings because he is already engaged to another woman.
I have lost count of how many times I have watched Guang Xi and Mu Cheng’s reunion. That particular scene is my most favorite of all time.
Apart from that, I like the fact that Mu Cheng does not marry anyone in the time that she was separated from Guang Xi. The girl is extremely poor and is the mother of Guang Xi’s child. She has a prospective groom willing to accept her and the child but she does not relent. She is that loyal to Guang Xi.
The whole process of falling in love unknowingly with the same person again is what I cherish most about this show.
2. Mars
I watched Mars in 2016 and gave it a 3 rating. Here is the synopsis and detailed review of this Taiwanese drama.
Reasons I Re-watch ‘Mars’
The best thing about this show is the lead actors, Barbie Hsu and Vic Zhou’s chemistry. I have watched this show repeatedly only to see them together. I can never get enough of this amazing couple.
The second best thing about ‘Mars’ is Vic Zhou’s menacing bad-boy character, Ling Chen. Ling is your quintessential Casanova who is popular with girls, rides fancy bikes, and breaks all kinds of rules. He is specifically known to change girlfriends faster than his bikes. But that changes when he meets the recluse, Qi Luo.
The development Ling’s character shows is what I love most about him. We see his backstory and how he has a traumatic past dealing with a mother who suffered from mental ailments and losing his twin brother right before his eyes.
Ling puts on a bad boy façade to protect his vulnerable self. And this side of his is seen only by Qi Luo. He starts changing and improving as a person after he meets Qi Luo. Even the nervous wreck, Qi Luo learns to be fearless and brave after falling for Ling. And this is what I love most about this couple.
They both show tremendous growth as individuals after meeting each other showing how important they are for one another.
I love this show so much that not only do I watch the Taiwanese version repeatedly, I watch its Japanese version too.
3. An Incurable Case of Love
I watched ‘An Incurable Case of Love’ in 2020 and gave it a 4 rating. Here is the synopsis and detailed review of this Japanese drama.
Reasons I Re-watch ‘An Incurable Case of Love’
Sakura is a nurse at a hospital, which she joined only to be close to her dream man, Kairi Tendo. Tendo is a heart surgeon who Sakura met once before when he helped treat a woman who had collapsed on a street.
Sakura is a clumsy nurse but she is dedicated, hardworking, meticulous, and simply adorable. I love both the character of Sakura and the actress, Mone Kamishiraishi. I have watched this show many times each time have laughed at Sakura’s slip-up and silly mistakes. Tendo nitpicking her work only adds to the amusement.
Another highlight of the show is the rock-hearted Dr. Tendo melting to Sakura’s sincere efforts of having him fall for her. He feels jealous when another guy hits on Sakura, feels protective when she injures herself, chases after her when she goes away from him and does everything you wouldn’t expect someone of his stature to do.
It is a fun show that I keep watching time and again when I need something light to feel better.
4. You’re Beautiful
I watched ‘You’re Beautiful’ in 2016 and gave it a 3.4 rating. Here is the synopsis and detailed review of this Korean drama.
Reasons I Re-watch ‘You’re Beautiful’
I’ll be honest here and say that I watch this show repeatedly only for Jang Keun Suk. Yes, he has other shows too but he looks his absolute best in this one. Apart from some bad fashion choices, I have liked all of his looks in the show and I simply love to watch him as the arrogant and rude boy-band leader, Hwang Tae Kyung.
Seeing the unapproachable and cold Hwang Tae Kyung fall for the naive and innocent, Gi Mi Nam is heart-warming. Their love story is full of laughs and highly entertaining.
His chemistry with Park Shin Hye is like no other couple. Also, the show is funny. Super-funny. It is a light-hearted drama that still brings a smile to my face.
PS: Watch out for Jang Keun Suk say ‘Go Mi Nam’ in his deep voice.
5. Kiss Series
I watched the three versions of ‘Itazura Na Kiss’ in 2016 and gave the show an average of 4 rating. Here is the synopsis, detailed review, and comparison of the three versions that I have watched.
Reasons I Re-watch ‘Kiss Series’
Kiss Series or originally known as ‘Itazura Na Kiss’ is based on a Japanese manga of the same name and adapted in different languages as TV shows. I was once obsessed with the story and watched multiple versions of it including the animated version.
Of the three versions, I watch the Taiwanese version i.e. ‘It Started With A Kiss’ repeatedly because I love the main leads the most. Despite the common story, I feel it is relatively funnier and has a better cast.
The story is about a young girl named Xiang Qin who gets rejected by the school’s boy-genius, Zhi Shu. After the humiliation, she tries to maintain a distance from Zhi Shu but circumstances keep pushing them closer to each other. I personally do not like Zhi Shu because of his frequent snide remarks but I love Xiang Qin for her undying spirit and unfettered cheerfulness. Nothing he says or does dampens her happy nature and I love that about her. I watch this show only to laugh at Xiang Qin’s stupidity.
Drama world is one of my favorite places to be and shows like these are the reason why I like Asian dramas so much. The funny fact is that I am currently re-watching ‘An Incurable Case of Love’ and loving each moment of it.
