I’m In A Drama Slump And I Don’t Know What To Do

According to Google, the word ‘slump’ means-

Adding ‘drama’ before it gives you a ‘drama slump’, which means losing interest in watching dramas or the inability to finish watching dramas. And this is what I am currently suffering from. 🙁 Dramawise I had a great start to this year as I kept up with my resolve to review at least three dramas per month.

Come June, I reviewed 3 dramas within the first ten days. The over-ambitious me got excited that I was sure to complete at least 6 shows that month. Cut to, mid-July and I was struggling to even start watching a show let alone finishing my half-watched list.

I don’t know what kind of jinx hit me that I dropped each of the shows one by one after investing a substantial amount of time in them. And then, I started exhibiting the following symptoms.

Symptoms of a Drama Slump

1. Opening OTT apps, looking at the ‘continue watching’ list and then closing the app immediately

2. Adding shows to ‘watchlist’ but never watching them

3. Staring at the thumbnail of a popular drama but not being able to click on play

4. Skimming through written updates of shows but not actually being able to watch it

5. Spending hours watching random YouTube videos but not being able to commit 16 hours to a drama

6. Even shows with shorter episodes don’t help revive interest in dramas

I realised I was in a terrible drama slump so I chose to take the rest of June off and watch a show only when I feel like it. I did start a couple of new shows that were trending but I couldn’t bring myself to commit seriously to them.

The rest of June and the whole of July and August went by and I couldn’t watch a single show. I started to think about what could have caused this sudden disinterest in my favourite activity. And after much rumination, I derived the following points that could probably be the reason behind my aversion to dramas.

Probable Reasons for a Drama Slump

1. I over-consumed dramas from January to June and grew weary of them. It’s like how you feel pukish when you eat your favourite food every single day.

2. I stuck to the same genres (light-hearted, romantic, emotional) and started to feel bored of it. I was tired of watching predictable stories.

3. My attention span had reduced. I couldn’t pay attention to a story that would take time to build and develop.

4. I faced commitment issues. I didn’t want to start something I couldn’t finish.

5. Lastly, the hype around certain dramas killed my excitement. I have this problem. I hate following trends. So, when everyone is watching a single show, I lose interest in it. I cannot be part of a crowd.

Currently, I have a ton of shows lined up on my ‘to-watch’ list and I am motivating myself to at least complete one episode of any random show and see if it helps generate interest in it. I have my fingers crossed and hope to find my way out of this bad slump soon.
