U-Prince The Series: The Single Lawyer: Episode 1
U-Prince is a series of romantic Thai lakorns (dramas) where 12 lucky girls are given the chance to date a hot male ambassador from a certain faculty. Each U-Prince is different from the other and so is every love story. I am starting my U-Prince journey with ‘The Single Lawyer’. Before I give you the synopsis of this show please keep in mind that the character names in this drama will sound weird to a foreign viewer so please bear with it.
Firstclass (Paisarnkulwong Vachiravit/August) is a top scorer at the Law University where has scored straight A’s in all of his law exams. He is an extremely punctual person and loves collecting watches and clocks. Minute (Intarasut Lapisara) is a rich spoilt brat and loves spending her time indulging in some retail therapy. One evening while on her usual shopping spree she comes to know that her family has filed for bankruptcy. Her mother informs her that her father and she have left for Hong Kong and that Minute will have to manage things on her own for some time. Not accustomed to any kind of hardship, Minute asks her friend BM for help and he offers her a place in his house which he shares with his brother Firstclass. To accept his offer she has to pretend to be BM’s girlfriend so nobody suspects him of being gay and he will pay her a huge amount of money for it. Minute happily agrees to help BM unaware that she will not only have to share the house with Firstclass but will also have to take lessons in good manners from him.

U-Prince The Series: The Single Lawyer: Episode 1
The show starts with the U-Report in which the two reporters are nervous to meet the U-Prince ambassador from the Faculty of Law as he is known to be very punctual as they are late today. And they are right about it as Firstclass has already left. They chase after him and he gives them 30 seconds to ask their questions. They ask him how he managed to get straight A’s in all of his exams. He says memorizing the whole textbook does the trick. They ask him if it is true that he loves to collect watches and clocks. He says he is very particular about time so he collecting watches is his hobby.
They then ask what would he do if he falls for a girl who is not punctual at all. He says that will depend on how much he likes the girl. They ask him how he expresses his love for a girl and he replies that when he likes a girl he pretends to not care about her. 30 seconds are up and he bids the interviewers goodbye.
At the sports club, Minute and her friends see a handsome man walk towards them and bet who he must be there for. One girl says that the man is there to see her while the other girl guesses that he is there for Minute. They decide to ask him to put an end to the debate when a pretty girl comes to the man and they happily leave together.
Minute and her friends then proceed to the parking lot where they see Firstclass. Minute is stunned to see him and she prays that he does not spot her but he does. Firstclass locks his eyes with Minute and looks like he wants to say something but refrains from doing so.
Just then, a girl approaches him and he leaves with her. Minutes friends who are awestruck by Firstclass’s appearance ask her about him and she tells them that he is the U-Prince ambassador from the Law faculty and she met him when she has messed up with Kiryu. Her friend then guesses that it was because of Kiryu that her Somza band got disbanded. The comment annoys Minute but she brushes it off and leaves saying she wants to go shopping.
At the mall, Minute spots a beautiful watch and tries to buy it but her credit card gets declined. She picks a fight with the saleswoman over it when Firstclass walks in and interjects that she is once again fighting with people and blaming them for her mistakes. She grouses about him ignoring her deliberately while he pays no heed to her. He then hands her the National Credit Bureau’s number and leaves with his watch. Minute screams after him calling him a rude guy. The saleswoman then advises her to call the number he gave her to know why her card got declined.
Minute leaves the showroom in a huff and immediately calls the Credit Bureau and learns that her account has been suspended by the Bank of Thailand. Shocked she starts crying to her mother who calls her to inform that their family has filed for bankruptcy and will be leaving for Hong Kong soon.
Her mother asks her to stay back in Thailand so no one grows suspicious of their activities. She asks Minute to sell off all her designer bags and rent a room close to her campus. Holding her shopping bags close to her Minutes starts wailing in the middle of the mall.
Following her mother’s instructions, Minute rents a room in a cheap hotel but she ends up spending the night wide awake after her brief encounter with a cockroach and a gecko in her room.
She calls her friend BM and asks him to meet her. When he asks her what’s the matter with her she only says that she is having a tough time. He tells her that she can call him whenever she wants to and that he will always be there for her. And just like that, he appears beside her and she runs into his arms. He consoles her and tells her not to worry as everything will be alright.
BM brings Minute to his house where she tells him about her situation. He tells her that he can help her out if she helps him out. He then shows her his boyfriend’s photo and reveals that he is gay. Minute is flabbergasted at first as she cannot believe BM.
She then asks him how she can help him and he proposes that she act to be his girlfriend and he will pay her 50,000 baht for it. The thought of having so much money makes her excited.
She starts imagining all the stuff she can buy with that money. He then tells her that he plans to stay with his boyfriend Pitcher so she will have to live in his house. Minute is more than happy hearing that she will have his whole house to herself and so she happily agrees to help him.
The moment they seal the deal, Firstclass, who has been listening to the whole conversation from the bedroom steps out and opposes the idea. He tells his brother BM to speak the truth to his mother and not deceive her but Minute wants to go with the plan. She gets into an argument with Firstclass. BM intervenes and requests to have a word with Firstclass in private.
BM steps out of the room and tells Minute that Firstclass has agreed to the arrangement but Minute will first have to apologise to him. Minute reluctantly goes to Firstclass’s room and tries to apologize but Firstclass starts his countdown of 10 seconds and then asks her to buzz off. Angry she storms out of his room.
Next, we see BM carry Minute’s bags from her room while she walks before him like a princess. The owner of the room asks her if she is leaving and she sneers that she is leaving to never return to that place again.
On their way home, they stop by a café where Minute asks BM about his relation with Firstclass. BM reveals that his mother is a mistress and Firstclass is the son of his father’s wife. He says that despite knowing who BM is Firstclass always treated him like a real brother. He says that Firstclass has even kept this secret from his mother. Getting to the main topic, she asks what she is required to do as his fake girlfriend and he tells her that he will be seeing her more often and will flirt with her and she just has to play along.
Minute neatly organises her stuff in BM’s house and jumps on her new bed after she is done. She feels amazed at the fact that she will be sharing the house with the person she dislikes so much. But then she recalls an incident when she was being harassed by some goons and Firstclass came to her rescue. She then thinks that living with Firstclass may not be such a bad thing after all.
BM’s boyfriend Pitcher wakes up in bed and asks BM about Minute. He tells him that she must have gotten adjusted by now as Firstclass is there for her. Pitcher expresses his concern as he heard that Firstclass and Minute don’t get along and BM says that it is good if they fight because that way they will grow closer to each other. Pitcher gets naughty and pulls BM into bed with him.
Minute gets ready and leaves for college when she meets BM in the lift. She tries to strike a conversation with him but he ignores her. He then mocks her stream of Sports Science and she wonders how he got to know about her background. He then tells her that even though he has allowed BM and her to go on with their façade he will not permit them to behave as they please. She retorts that he can do whatever he wants but he has no right to interfere in her personal life. They then get to the university together in his car.
In the car, Firstclass shows Minute BM’s interview in which he stated that he likes girls who are sweet and well-mannered. He tells her that for BM’s mother to believe that she is his girlfriend she will need some attitude adjustment and lessons in good manners.
He shows her the contract BM prepared for her in which she will have to take lessons from Firstclass to train to be a gracious lady. Minute feels mortified about the condition but then signs the agreement to avoid going back to being homeless. He then asks her to leave and like a well-mannered girl, she joins her hand and thanks him. She then politely requests him to open the door for her. (Poverty can teach anyone anything. hehehe)
When Minute returns home she tries to order a pizza but Firstclass disconnects the phone before she can place the order. He then starts with the lessons on becoming a gracious lady. He lists the hallmarks of a good lady and points out that Minute exhibits none of those qualities.
He then tells her how she has to behave with him considering that he is older than her. She protests and asks why she has to be respectful to him and he shows her the contract she signed that morning. The first lesson is how to ‘wai’ i.e. greet someone. With a cane in his hand, he corrects Minute’s posture and orders her to bend and sit in a specific way. In the last scene, we see Minute sit up in her bed resolving to act against this slavery.
Comments
I liked the first episode. 🙂 Its a fluffy romance with my favourite dramas tropes i.e. forced co-habitation and hate to love story. The cast also looks good. Actor Paisarnkulwong Vachiravit aka August with his stern and controlled expressions seems very apt for the role. I am watching his drama for the first time and from what I have seen till now I am sure I am going to like him in this lakorn. Intarasut Lapisara aka Apple looks cute as Minute in this drama. I just cannot stop staring at her milky white legs. I don’t know how these women maintain such amazing legs. Minute is chirpy and annoying which balances out Firstclass’s reserved and stern nature. It is always fun to watch people of opposite natures fall in love.
Coming to the story, though I know this is a mindless romance, I still find it difficult to believe that Minute’s parents actually deserted her and asked her to fend for herself. C’mon, who does that? It is OK if they want her to continue living in Thailand but how can you go AWOL on your only daughter?
Minute is lucky to have BM at her beck and call. The best part about having a friend like BM is that not only does he let you live in his plush apartment for free he also pays you a hefty amount to be his fake girlfriend. Like seriously? Why don’t I have a friend like BM? Damn you life! You are never nice to me. In my next birth, I want to live the life of a romantic drama heroine where you get to wear designer clothes even when completely broke.
